York Foods opens its first regional supermarket in the city center.

By on June 17, 2020

It seems like Tokyo is craving for more food.

In May this year, York Foods, a regional supermarket chain and subsidiary of Seven & i Holdings, opened its flagship store in Chiba. On June 17, another store followed in Shinjuku ward’s Tomihisa cho.

The 1,648-square-meter supermarket rebranded from Ito Yokado with a lineup of fresh, delicatessen and processed foods. While Ito Yokado targeted suburban dwellers, the new York brand appeals to busy urbanites. The change was fueled by the changing demand of city shoppers for quick, ready-to-eat meals. In response, York has expanded the category by 1.4 times.

The store has a typical stock of 350 kinds of meat and cut, 340 fruits and vegetables, 290 fresh fish, 270 side dishes, 60 baked goods, 1,700 daily and processed foods, and 6,800 miscellaneous items instore. Compared to regular neighborhood stores, York carries a wider variety of ethnic seasonings from Asia and Mexico to cater to residents with  diverse lifestyles and food choices such as foreign residents.

The newly redesigned layout that makes it easy for consumers to find what they are looking for, includes a self-checkout system for delis and bakery located near the entrance.
