Japan was the 12th-most visited country in 2017 with the highest growth in tourist arrivals that outpaced some Southeast Asian countries, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization. According to JNTO, 46.2% of inbound travelers visit Tokyo that translates to an average spending per traveler of ¥153,029 (2018).
With coronavirus hitting Japan’s tourism hard dropping the number of tourists by 99.9% in April compared to 2019, Japan vows to make the comeback always stronger than the setback.
The Japan Tourism Agency this week proposed partly subsidizing inbound travelers to Japan, with travel vouchers to kickstart tourism again – once the coronavirus storm subsides. Hiroshi Tabata, chief of the agency said in a news conference, it is preparing a whopping 1.35 trillion yen (US$12.5 billion) kickstart program that could begin as early as July 2020 if the number of coronavirus infections decrease to or maintained within manageable levels.
