Facebook’s new “Messenger Rooms” enables video group chat

By on April 25, 2020

Social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic is not all bad if you can stay connected with people and feel their presence anytime even when you’re not in the same place.

That’s exactly what Facebook has been working on. Over the next few weeks, Facebook will be launching a video-call function called Messenger Rooms, a video group chat for up to 50 people.

Messenger Rooms allows anyone to create a video meeting and invite their friends to join, even if they are not Facebook users. Participants without facebook accounts can join using the web browser.

Currently, there are more than 700 million people making voice or video calls every day through Facebook’s two messaging apps – Messenger and Whats App.

People can join in Messenger Rooms without downloading an app. Facebook will flash notifications at the top of users’ news feed to notify them of  “rooms” their friends have created. You can pop into the rooms whenever you want.

To protect video group chats from intruders,  Messenger Rooms will have default settings controlled by people who create the rooms and can remove someone. However, users can also report if a room violates Facebook’s rules. Facebook says it will not run ads and collect data from rooms to provide the service and improve the product experience.
