Facebook’s Messenger app has become simpler but faster.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on his facebook page the new version of Messenger is rolling out on iOS.

To non-techies, the redesigned messaging app means one-quarter of the file size has been reduced making messaging twice as fast without eating a lot of your phone’s memory. This would be useful if your phone’s storage is running low or you have a slow network, but it’s a welcome change in general.

“We reduced Messenger’s core code by 84 percent – going from 1.7+ million lines of code to 360,000” the company writes about this new Project LightSpeed version of Messenger that will be available in the next few weeks.

Facebook says that with the new simpler design, “a few features will be temporarily unavailable.”  The Discover tab at the bottom formerly used to search for games has been removed. What’s left are the ‘chat’ tab and the ‘People’ tab.

Facebook said bringing back the removed features is in the works but no timeline was provided.
