New Italian emoticon coming soon

By on February 3, 2020

Unicode Consortium, the approving body of standard emojis used worldwide,  has announced the release of 117 new emojis to come in the second half of 2020.

Included in the soon-to-be-released emojis is an Italian hand gesture called “pinched fingers”.  According to research quoted by The New York Times, Italians use around 250 gestures daily.

Among these hand gestures, the one where pinching your fingers against the thumb and moving your hand back and forth against your chest, has become very popular.  It is often used as a sarcastic way of asking someone “what do you want?” to express an overwhelming disbelief.  In some mediterranean countries like Israel, it could mean “hold your horses,” “just a minute” or  “be patient”.

Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at a Parliament session using  pinched fingers at one of his speeches to convey his feelings.

With the latest addition to emoticons we use on social media,  all human expressions and Italian culture in particular, would find an entertaining and useful way to convey emotions.
