The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries estimates the amount of discarded food waste in the country to be around 17 million tons. Households account for 10 million tons and 7 by food manufacturing companies. That’s a huge amount of food waste when you think about it.

While 4 million tons of this are recycled as feeds and fertilizers, it’s not enough. So the Japanese government has required businesses producing 10 million tons or more, to report its recycling activities.

House Foods, one of Japan’s largest food brand and manufacturer of curry roux, has come up with a project to repurpose raw spice that does not meet its production quality standards, into crayons, thus, contributing to a sustainable society. The giant food maker has started crowdfunding of spice crayons on Makuake, a Japanese crowdfunding portal, and many families are supporting the food maker’s recycling initiative.

Spice crayon is made by mixing spices and rice wax. Available in clove, cinnamon, turmeric, thyme, basil, parsley, white pepper, paprika, red pepper, and Laurier, each color has its unique aroma and safe to use by children. The crayons come with a “Coloring book” of spice-growing countries.

1 set of crayons and coloring book is 2,500 yen.
