Halloween is Japan’s second favorite Western tradition next to Christmas.

Thirty years ago, Halloween was nothing but a bizarre celebration of All Hallows Eve. But now, everyone in Japan is totally hooked, thanks to its love of cosplay (costume play).

Since Halloween is a family affair, many parents who joined parades and school events wore costumes ranging from kawaii (cute) to the outright kowai (scary).

Alice in Wonderland

When asked by the school to come up with a group theme, the Suzukis decided to do Alice in Wonderland.  Daughter as Alice  poses for a photo in puffed sleeve dress with the iconic pinafore worn over the top. To her right is mom dressed as the cold and calm Red Queen (not to be confused with the Queen of Hearts) and to her left is dad as the palace guard.

Toy Story 4

What can be cuter than an eight-month old baby in a Buzz Lightyear suit? Buzz is a toy Space Ranger superhero in the Toy Story movie. This boy is probably too young to enjoy his costume but he totally killed it!

Pennywise, the Clown

This boy’s mom, a make-up expert, captures the iconic creepy smile of It (famously known as Pennywise), a cosmic evil character which preys upon children in Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel. But we’re still racking our brains for what the tongue was made of!

This family dreams up of looking as spooky as possible on halloween but, as the holiday creeps closer, they ended up ditching their plans. Instead, they turned to the makeup they already have and with a red hoodie grabbed at a thrift store (300 yen) for their son, Miguel, things worked out in the end.
