Mizutaen orchard opens for the persimmons-picking season.

By on October 25, 2019

When autumn season comes, Tokyo families know the drill. Head over to Mizutaen, grab your baskets and gorge yourselves on all the sweetest persimmons you can pick.

Mizutaen located in Higashimurayama town, is just a one-hour train ride from central Tokyo which makes for an ideal day trip destination.  Compared to Yamanashi, it is one of the oldest orchards in Japan that started growing pears in 1952.

Persimmon or Diospyros Kaki is the widely cultivated Japanese variety in Asia. The place is   managed by a family thus, to prevent overcrowding, visitors are requested to reserve on the phone.  Open from 10 am until 3 pm everyday, the last admission time is 2 pm.

If you go on a weekday, you can also buy nearby some fresh kiwi, sweet potato and La France pear,  a Western variety dubbed as the “Queen of Fruits” which is easier to grow in Japan than in its birthplace France because of the climate.

The most important takeaway from a fruit-picking trip is teaching the kids about where food comes from, how and when it grows.  For parents, a quick trip can take away the stresses of urban living.  The only downside to a visit here is that the toilet (at a convenience store)  is a 5-minute walk from the orchard.
