There’s a new potato chips in town

By on September 23, 2019

A new brand of potato chips is causing quite a stir in Japan.

The snack named after the acid-spraying whip scorpion, Vinegaroon, smells and tastes like vinegar. The flavor was produced with a combination of  acetic and citric acids with an intention to replicate the liquid emitted by a vinegaroon when threatened.

Marketed as a snack with a “scary spice”, it is expected to pique the interest of chips lovers ahead of the Halloween season.

The new snack comes in 100-gram resealable bag and retails at 540 yen. Along with the distinctive acidic flavor, the packaging’s illustration of a vinegaroon by illustrator Kenro Shinchi, gives it some added impact.

The new potato chips will be available at the Kasumi Marche Food Fair from October 9-11 at the Kasumigaseki Building in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward.
