French style forest park opens in Yokohama

By on September 2, 2019

Kids today know little about the world outside the classroom and free outdoor play has been replaced with long screen time.

Compared to other countries, Tokyo still lacks stimulating outdoor environment to foster children’s comprehensive development. Well, not for long.

On September 14, the 31st nature forest will expand to Yokohama giving all Tokyo families a first-hand experience of nature, without leaving the city. Yokohama’s Forest Adventure opens in an undeveloped area of the Yokohama Zoological Park adjacent to Zoorasia.

In 2006, Forest Adventure, the likes you see in France, opened its 1,100 meter-high park in Mount Fuji with scenic views of Japan’s iconic mountain. The concept having been well received by families in Japan, led to thirty more new openings. Yokohama will be its first location in Tokyo.

In France, children as young as 5 are exposed to a wide array of activities that challenge their naive understanding of gravity for example. By the time they reach 7, they will have gained outdoor knowledge and hands-on experience.

The soon-to-open forest park, will give young kids first-time real athletics experience climbing from a height of 90cm. Strollers are allowed in some courses.

There are so many thrilling activities both adults and children can enjoy together:  Tarzan Swing where you can jump from a 9-meter high ground toward a net; Zip Slide with three age-appropriate levels and many more. And when your active children get hungry, a 45-minute all-you-can-eat “Kids Course” is available.

Activities for children include 24 kinds, 4 zip slides at 4 sites and are grouped according to height and weight. The first group is for grade 3 students who are at least 110 cm tall weighing 130 kg or less. The “Canopy Course” is for those with a height of110 cm or more and weigh 130 kg or less. The “Adventure Course” is for kids in 4th grade or older, or who are 140cm tall and 130kg in weight.

There are two plans to choose from: The “Standard Plan” allows you to experience 40 activities on 4 sites and 4 zip slides. The time required is about 2 to 3 hours. The “Exciting Plan” includes 6 activities per site. The journey takes about 30 minutes.

Parents – take note. The place has no changing room. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for messy outdoor play. The “Trail Adventure” ideal for mountain biking is scheduled to be added to its list in March 2020.
