Japan’s red fall foliage festival

By on September 17, 2019

The red fall foliage or the Kochia festival in Japan starts on September 21, 2019.

Kochia, essentially an annual herb that grows in Eurasia,  is an important food source of the Japanese. The seeds called tonburi with a texture, shape and color similar to caviar,  is a delicacy of Akita prefecture. These glossy green seeds are dried, boiled, soaked, and then rubbed by hand to remove the skin and used as a food garnishing. Thus, a Kochia field in Japan is often called caviar field.

The colours of the Kochia field  at the National Hitachi Seaside Park gradually begins to change from green to red from the end of September.
Around mid-October when the bright crimson Kochia
fully blooms, the competition with Cosmos starts and becomes the highlight of the autumn season.
In late October, the Kochia changes from red to gold.
