These frozen macarons taste awesome and they’re cheap.

In a city with more than its fair share of authentic European cuisine and highly skilled pastry chefs, it comes as no surprise that the popularity of artisanal macaron, a century-old French-Italian dessert has reached fever pitch.

Even at ¥300 – ¥600 a piece (depending on where you buy them), buying a dozen of Aoki Sadaharu’s macarons only to feed my family’s weekly addiction can be a drain on my budget.

Macarons aren’t cheap for a reason. The ingredients to make delicious macaron shells and ganache filling are mostly imported and they are tricky to make.

But I just found a substitute.  Imported frozen macarons.  Picard, the French supermarket in Azabu Juban sells a box of 16 delicious French macarons for  1,200 yen (plus tax) which means a piece is just 75 yen.

The macaron shells are light, crisp on the outside with a smooth buttery filling in the center.  Not only have these macarons the right sweetness, the kids love them too!
