New D-I-Y Apple repair program starts next year

By on November 18, 2021

Starting next year,  iPhone users will  be able to carry out repairs on their own, announced Apple on Wednesday as part of its Self-Service Repair program. People advocating the right to repair have expressed support for Apple’s move – to whch iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens’ tweeted, “the move we’ve been working towards for nearly 20 years.”

Disassembling Apple products isn’t exactly a walk in the park. With Apple providing component parts, tools, and manuals, tech-savvy users will be able to learn how to disassemble without fear of ruining their device.

For the same price set by Apple’s authorized repair centers, the genuine component parts you will need to repair the products along with how-to manuals and tools will be made available for purchase by the US tech giant. Initially, Apple will make available for purchase, more than 200 different parts and tools for fixing its iPhone 12 and 13 devices. The program will eventually include Mac computers that have M1 chips.

Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said, “By making genuine Apple parts widely available, customers will be able to make repairs on their own.”

Since Apple-certified repair methods aren’t published online, some device owners have turned to YouTube tutorials or through stories from corporate experts like iFixit for repair tips.

Apple has long faced increasing pressure from right-to-repair advocates to give users the ability to fix their own devices and its long-standing policy of designing hardware that can’t be easily upgraded or incorporating certain components that only Apple has access to.

In 2021, US President Joe Biden issued an executive order instructing the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate the issue.

FTC in July, took legal action against the manufacturer’s practice of making it very difficult for buyers to repair their products or find other service providers to repair them. It was unanimously approved.

This program is available for non-warranty repairs. Apple will still do the repairs for warranty-covered products.
