A lot of families purchase train passes for children commuting to school everyday. But you will realize they don’t give as much savings. You would be better off just buying train tickets as you go.

On Monday however, Odakyu Electric Railway Co. came up with a first-of-its-kind idea that will earn families 90% savings on train tickets. It announced it will cut train fares for children aged 6-12 to a 50- yen flat rate starting in the spring of 2022. The flat rate applies using prepaid IC cards regardless of how long of a distance you travel on an Odakyu-specific route.

If, for example, your child commutes everyday from Atsugi to Shinjuku or vice versa, which costs 510 yen now, the amount you will have saved over a 20-day period under the new flat rate would come to 18,400 yen. And that’s without the weekend jaunts to theme parks!

The urban train operator that runs trains between Tokyo and Kanagawa also has a foreigner-friendly website where you can check routes and fares.
