As people limit their trips to the bakery, frozen bread delivered door-to-door, a new type of service similar to Uber Eats, is creating a wave of demand.

Pansuku, an ordering and delivery platform, has a working arrangement with bread and pastry shops all over Japan.

For frozen bread to get delivered to your door on a regular basis, subscribers need to register and agree to a flat charge of 2,900 yen plus a 780 yen delivery fee.

Around 10,000 subscribers have signed up since the service was launched a year and a half ago.

Similar to a Lucky bag (fukubukuro) , the element of surprise in not being informed what bread will be shipped to subscriber is all part of the fun. Products are neatly sealed in special freezer bags and tastes no different from fresh bread when thawed and popped into the oven.

The service has become so popular that there is now a waiting period of three months to sign up.

Pansuku’s website is only available in Japanese.
