Did you notice that your electricity bill this year is higher than the previous year?

Well, that’s because Japan makes adjustments as often as necessary depending on the supply and demand situation. Next month is no different.

Starting January 2022, households will be facing another increase in their electricity bills this winter.

Ten electric power companies all around Japan have announced they will be putting energy prices up starting 2022.

On December 6th, the power consumption rate within the TEPCO serviced areas rose to 96% tightening the supply and demand situation. This drives up the amount TEPCO pays to provide energy and that cost is now being passed onto consumers.

Major electric power companies have raised their prices for four consecutive months starting September this year. According to TEPCO, if you compare the electricity bill of an average household in January 2021 to December 2021, the amount of increase will be around 1168 yen.

Tips for Lowering Your Energy Consumption in Winter

  1. Set Your Heater at Lower Temperature.
  2. Stay Warm with Sweaters and Socks.
  3. Use Blankets to Stay Warm at Night.
  4. Close Dividers or Doors of Unused Rooms.
  5. Use Insulated Curtains to Trap Heat at Night.
  6. Put Temporary Insulation on Your Windows.
