Oldest Polar Bear in Japan found dead at the zoo.

Nana, the oldest polar bear in Japan, was found dead yesterday morning at the Yagiyama Zoological Park in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.

Diagnosed with liver cancer, she was 36 years and a month old at the time of her death. That is over 100 years old in human years. Polar Bears have an average life expectancy of 25-30 years.

She started losing her appetite around April of last year and had been under treatment since. Born at a zoo in Canada in December 1984, Nana was transferred to Yagiyama Zoological Park in September of the following year. She was very popular with zoo visitors who watched her play in a pool with toys or roll around in the snow.

On Tuesday, January 26th, the zoo will honour the 35-year endangered species with a flower stand and a message for the visitors to see.
