The ice rinks have returned around town and it’s time to have some fun.
Here are some of the great spots across the city to do just that. If you are a child of the 80s, you probably have fond memories of rocking at the rink in winter.
Well, here’s the chance for you to let your kids experience a taste of your childhood.
Mom and Dad, go ahead lace up your shoes and glide around the ice rinks with them too.

ART RINK AT YOKOHAMA RED BRICK WAREHOUSE

Rocking around the Christmas tree is not as fun as spending an afternoon or early evening enjoying stunning views of Yokohama harbor while skating around this rink. Now on its 15th run, Art Rink still remains to be Tokyo families’ top choice for good reasons. Not only does it offer a festive combination of winter skating and art lighting in the shadow of Cosmoland, the skate hire is also the cheapest you will find in the city compared to others. And, in case you end up taking the wrong skates size, you can vent your frustration at the Hot Hot Café close by! Early morning skating lessons are available once a week for those in need of perfecting their triple axel. This season, the theme-obsessed Art Rink features ‘Sweets Ice Rink’ with the surroundings designed by Thai illustrator Wisut Ponnimit featuring his adorable character Mamuang. In case you fancy some Chinese meals after skating, don’t forget that Chinatown is just a hobble away.
TOSHIMAEN SKATE RINK

If, as 2019 winds down, you’re thinking about ice skating and more, there isn’t a more fun place to go than Toshimaen. The outdoor ice skating rink is next to Toshimaen’s amusement park where fun can be had at its newly renovated Carnival Town that offers games and rides, petting zoo, including an insect museum. The theme park aims to please as even your four- legged member of the family has a special place to run and play o-leash in a secured environment. And just in case you want to take a break from all the walking, you can watch a movie at the cinema close by or eat at any of its restaurants oering holiday food. Come early and do your ice skating at night when holiday themed lights are brightly lit for a fun experience.
KODOMO NO KUNI SKATE RINK

Now on its 54th year, Kodomo no Kuni’s spacious kid-centric skating rink is located inside a 976,000 sqm natural-park in Yokohama equipped with a diaper stand, a nursing room and baby-friendly male-female toilets. Aptly called “Children’s Land”, the park was founded in 1965 by the Imperial family with young kids in mind. It has virtually everything that makes child play meaningful from petting zoos and playground equipment to rides and food stalls. Inside the park is a cattle ranch where wranglers teach children important life skills from milking cows to making cheese and butter. Located just a 7-minute walk from the Prince Hotel in Shin Yokohama, this 60 m x 30 m international-standard skating rink is open all year round for free skating at all skill levels. It doubles as a school where actual classes are offered.
EDOGAWA SPORTSLAND Open all year round

Aptly called a sportsland for a reason, this indoor skate rink also has a gym, swimming pool, futsal, and Para Sports facilities. Admission, shoe rental, hourly parking fees are all in the 500 yen and under range. Skate lessons are also offered to both parents and children. Nearest stations: Shin Koiwa and Urayasu

Citizen Plaza Skate Rink’s 60 x 30m international standard sized space is an indoor option for those who don’t skate in the cold. Just a short 7-minute walk from Takadanobaba station on JR lines, the place is popular for families in the neighboring Nakano, Shinjuku areas. Opened all year round, the number of small kids learning the sport on weekends has increased over the years.
TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN ICE SKATING PARK SOLAMACHI Jan 4 - Mar 5, 2020
One-on-one skating lesson for children being oered at the Tokyo SKYTREE TOWN® ICE SKATING PARK this season makes this a suitable place to visit for families with young children. Tell the staff you want a 10-minute lesson (500 yen) upon entry to reserve an instructor. The pop-up rink which runs through to March 5, 2020 is suitably positioned at the foot of Tokyo’s tallest tower for a magical gliding experience. The special mini rink for children made with earth-friendly plastic caters to preschool and primary school aged children.

Roppongi’s MIDTOWN ICE RINK located on a spacious area makes a convenient choice for the expat crowd. If you have kids who haven’t experienced ice skating in your life, on-site instructors will be happy to see that you do for just 500 yen. For some people who are not used to skating in cold, a heated rest area within the complex oers some convenience. Midtown Ice Rink is one of the most frequented places in the city with about 35,000 repeat and new visitors coming to skate. If you love illumination and gardens, go night skating for a perfect holiday feel. It’s a shame the rink won’t be open until next month but let this something to look forward to in 2020.
