Nintendo Switch Lite Goes On Sale Tomorrow
The new Nintendo Switch Lite model will be on sale tomorrow worldwide. The new model is a compact and lightweight version of “Nintendo Switch” released in March 2017.
The Switch Lite is a single handheld unit, integrating the Joy-Con as part of the main unit’s hardware, and uses a smaller 5.5 inches (14 cm) screen. Additionally, a regular directional pad replaces the four directional buttons on the integrated left Joy-Con.
The size is about 10cm in length, 3cm in width, and the weight is about 120g. Although it varies greatly depending on the software to be played, the estimated battery duration has slightly been boosted from approximately 2.5 - 6.5 hours to approximately 3 - 7 hours.
This is due to the smaller screen size, the new SoC hardware being used, and the removal of certain power-consuming features such as the Joy-Con HD Rumble and IR camera that were only usable with removable Joy-Con.
That said, the Switch Lite only directly supports games that can be played in handheld mode, retaining features like the Switch’s gyroscopic sensors and Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC communication compatibility. Some tabletop games that require the HD Rumble or IR camera features, such as 1-2-Switch, will require players to use separate Joy-Con with the Switch Lite. The system does not support any docking or connectivity to a television, so it is incompatible with games that require television mode.
Players who attempt to purchase games that require television or tabletop mode via the eShop on the Switch Lite will be notified of the incompatibility. In addition to other normal Joy-Con, the Switch Lite does support external controllers otherwise compatible with the Switch.
The Switch Lite has a price of 19,980 yen + tax in Japan and US$199.99 in the United States and is available in three colors: yellow, grey, and turquoise. A special Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield branded version of the Switch Lite, based on the Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta, will launch on November 8, 2019, a week before the games’ release.
The lite model is recommended for use by gamers who often play outdoors and those who are considering using multiplayer in combination with the “Nintendo Switch”.
